Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about eligibility, funding and studying as an adult learner.
Who can apply
Do I really not need A-Levels?
Not for these routes. Entry is based on your work and life experience, a short interview and meeting the eligibility rules, so your history matters more than past exam results.
How old do I need to be?
You need to be 21 or over. Our courses are designed for adult learners who want a career change or a step up.
What counts as experience?
Paid work, caring for family, volunteering and running a household can all count. You do not need a particular job title. We help you present your experience in your own words.
I already have a degree. Can I apply?
Usually the funding is for people who do not already hold a UK bachelor’s degree. Tell us what you have and we will say honestly whether this route fits.
Do I need to have lived in the UK?
Most applicants need to have lived in the UK for the past 3 years or more, and some other residency routes qualify. Student Finance England makes the final decision, so we check your situation with you first.
Money and Student Finance
Is this really free?
Our help costs you nothing, because the education provider pays us. Your course fees are covered by a government tuition fee loan, so nothing is due upfront.
Is student finance a grant?
No. Both the tuition fee loan and the maintenance loan are loans, not grants. You repay them through your income later.
When do I start paying the loan back?
Only once you earn above the repayment threshold, and then as a percentage of what you earn above it. Nothing is due while you are below it. We go through the details with you.
How much maintenance loan could I get?
It depends on where you live while studying and your household income. Try our Student Finance estimator for a rough yearly figure. Student Finance England decides the actual amount.
Do you handle my Student Finance application?
We guide you through every section of your Student Finance England application until your place is confirmed. You stay in control and submit it yourself.
Studying
Can I keep working while I study?
Many students do. Timetables vary by course and campus, so ask us about the current schedule for the one you are interested in.
How many days a week do I need to be on campus?
It depends on the course. Many are 1 or 2 days a week, and some have evening classes. We confirm the timetable when you apply.
What is a foundation year?
It is an extra first year that prepares you for degree-level study and is aimed at people without the usual entry qualifications. Read our guide for more.
What is a top-up degree?
It is the final year of a degree, for people who already have a relevant diploma or HND.
Where are the courses?
We focus on London, Birmingham and Manchester, and also have courses in Cardiff and other UK locations. Use the course finder and filter by location.
When can I start?
There are several intakes through the year. Message us and we will tell you the next available start date for your course.
About working with us
Who are Degree Pathways?
We help adult learners apply to UK higher education providers and complete Student Finance applications. We are not a lender or part of Student Finance England.
What if I am not accepted or change my mind?
You pay us nothing either way. If this is not the right fit, we will say so rather than push you into it.
How do you use my details?
Only to help with your enquiry or application. To ask us to stop contacting you or to delete your details, email info@degreepathways.co.uk.
Final eligibility is confirmed by the education provider and Student Finance England. Can’t see your question? Ask us.
